P8ntballer Techroom Naughty Dog Freestyle

Der P8ntballer widmet seinen neuesten Techroom der ND Freestyle von ICD:Naughty Dog FreestyleIndian Creek DesignThe latest offering from Indian Creek gets the Naughty Dogs' stamp of approval – but does it deserve it? Let's find out…After an extremely successful stint in the Novice and Amateur ranks from their creation in 1996, the Naughty Dogs, led by lifetime captain Rocky Knuth, made the jump to Professional Paintball in 2003. Winning 5-Man, 7-Man, 10-Man and XBall events in the NPPL and PSP series in 2003, and since becoming the first team to three-peat as 5-Man Pro World Champions, the Naughty Dogs are one of the most well-known and successful teams in modern Professional Paintball. On their way to their current position as a regular contender in the NPPL 7-Man Pro and PSP Pro XBall divisions, the Dogs have shot several Paintball guns, including the WGP Orracle Cocker, The Eblade Orracle frame, the Naughty Dog series Intimidator and, most recently, a custom version of the Indian Creek Designs Freestyle. Stacked with features and capable of incredible performance out of the box, the Naughty Dog Freestyle is rapidly gaining recognition and steadily rising to its rightful position as one of the world’s premier Paintball guns.Out thereOne of the earliest manufacturers of electropneumatic Paintball guns, Indian Creek Designs released the Bushmaster 2000 at the turn of the millennium to an extremely receptive Paintball community. Since that time, ICD has produced numerous versions of the Bushmaster, including the B2K and bargain-priced BKO. The Freestyle, however, is a unique departure from the familiar bolt-over-ram design that has dominated electronic Paintball gun design in recent years. Configured in a similar manner internally to the Airgun Designs Automag, the Freestyle utilizes blow-forward technology to send paintballs downrange. However, the Freestyle operates at extremely low pressure and utilizes a self-lubricating Delrin bolt in a compact and lightweight aluminum receiver that has made it one of the smallest and lightest tournament Paintball guns in the world. While initial models of the Freestyle were somewhat inefficient and considered busily milled, the latest variants, including the Naughty Dog, which was designed by Hawk Dobbins and Rocky Knuth himself, are both extremely air-efficient – thanks to upgraded internal parts – and attractively designed. In short, the Naughty Dog Freestyle is a small, light, sexy electronic paintball shooting machine.Equipped with all the features that have become expected of every legitimate tournament-level performer, the Naughty Dog Freestyle features Autococker barrel threads, a low, gripping vertical feed neck and anti-chop eyes and dual ball detents held in place by matching anodized metal covers. A refinement from other Freestyle models, the standard high-pressure vertical regulator and low-pressure regulator are adjustable with the same size Allen wrench, eliminating fumbling for more than one wrench at the chronograph while attempting to adjust velocity and fine-tune low pressure operation. The Naughty Dog’s standard high pressure regulator has also been lengthened from the standard ICD model to assist it in its role as a fore grip. A clamshell-like .45 grip frame is standard on the Naughty Dog, but is equipped with a unique blade trigger.Recessed into the rear of the grip frame is the single, illuminated switch that controls both turning the Paintball gun on and operating the anti-chop eyes. Switching the Naughty Dog on by flipping the switch upwards activates the eyes, while holding the trigger in and switching the Naughty Dog on turns the gun on without the anti-chop eyes. Indian Creek Designs provides every Freestyle with a pre-installed mounting rail and on/off bottle adapter, allowing a user to remove the Naughty Dog Freestyle from the box, add a nine-volt battery, barrel, hopper and compressed air tank, and play the game. Overall fit and finish of the Naughty Dog Freestyle is excellent, as the milling is smooth, the anodizing is attractive and the materials first-rate.In the ringThe Naughty Dog Freestyle arrived at the pre-fight weigh-in with an Empire HALO B hopper, Crossfire low-pressure (blue reg) compressed air tank and 14-inch aluminum barrel that placed it decidedly in the lightweight division, at well below 7lbs. Over the chronograph, the Naughty Dog delivered consistent velocity, recording strings in the 280 feet per second range with an average deviance of +/-7fps. Adjusting velocity is exceedingly simple, via an Allen key inserted into the bottom of the high-pressure regulator.Without adjustment, strings in excess of 12 balls per second are easily attainable and fast fingers will assuredly be able to easily reach consistent rates of fire into the high teens, depending on the player’s choice of hopper. Even at the highest rates of fire, the Freestyle neither chopped nor broke paintballs during testing, even in cold weather, utilizing fresh Draxxus Inferno paintballs. As long as players select fresh, high quality paintballs and make even a cursory effort to size their paintballs to their barrel, broken paintballs could become a startling rarity for players using a Naughty Dog Freestyle. On the field, one of the most impressive features of the Naughty Dog Freestyle, though not listed on the box, becomes immediately recognizable. The Freestyle is fantastically accurate. Even at extreme range, the Naughty Dog delivers laser beam-like streams of paint, placing ball after ball on the same spot, whether it be on-target or on-player. Snap-shooting is a joy with the Naughty Dog, and laning, sweet-spotting and dominating critical bunkers become simple, as a shooter is easily able to place surgical beams of paint into specific spots on the field from any distance. Efficiency is on-par with most other thousand-dollar tournament markers, as even back players were able to empty their packs while shooting a 68 cubic inch, 4500psi Crossfire compressed air system. All users found the Naughty Dog to be simple to operate, easy to handle and very comfortable to use even throughout long days of play; a testament to its ergonomics and light weight.Play dirtyAfter a day of play, cleaning and maintaining the Naughty Dog Freestyle is simple. Removing the ball detent/anti-chop eye covers requires the removal of only one small screw each, allowing a player to carefully clean the eyes and ball detents. Dismantling the Paintball gun is also simple, as removing the rear grip frame screw will allow the entire rear block to slide off of the back of the receiver, revealing the bolt assembly. As the Freestyle possesses precious few moving parts or critical o-rings, the cause of any potential problems is easily located and alleviated. A fresh battery for the gun, fresh batteries in the hopper or ensuring that the on/off is not restricting air flow to the Freestyle cures practically any problem that may arise during a day of play. Several weeks of extended testing in warm and cold weather revealed no mechanical problems or design flaws of any kind with the Naughty Dog Freestyle. With an MSRP at its release of $1175, but a going rate of less than $1k currently, the Naughty Dog Freestyle is an outstanding high-performance marker. Overflowing with features, packed with performance and simple to maintain, the Naughty Dog Freestyle is an ideal gun for any player who places a premium on performance, style and capabilities equal to or eclipsing that of anything on the market.
