Die US Paintballnews Site "PaintballStar" hat ein Interview mit Brad Maughan von Dynasty geführt, er hat bei Dynasty Dysected Regie geführt und bei Filmen wie Push mitgewirkt.
Brad Maughan, aka B-Money, from Dynasty takes us behind the scenes of Dynasty Dysected Vol. 1, where the best team in the world teaches you their secrets to success. Read Brad's responses to our wackly questions, watch the Dysected DVD trailer (you must be logged in), and buy the DVD.
Pbstar: So, who is Brad Maughan? Your nickname is B-Money. I heard that’s because you’re into money laundering…
Brad: I often find myself asking that very same question! Have you ever seen the movie “Who’s Harry Crumb”? There you will find all your answers. B-Money is a nickname Ollie gave me back in our Mare Island days. And about the laundering… that was along time ago. Just kidding, but seriously it was. (I just got Dodge Ball on DVD.)
Pbstar: Whatever, you can’t fool me, how else could Dynasty afford to play in every tournament from France to the Philippines?
Brad: That my friend is a mystery… even to me! You’d have to ask our agent Ryan Morgan about that kinda stuff.
Pbstar: Down to business, you’re the man behind Dynasty Dysected. For those who haven’t seen or heard about Dynasty Dysected, give us a brief run down of the DVD.
Brad: It all started with our clinics, which have been very successful for us. However, it’s a pretty big commitment to attend one of our “full team” clinics here in California. And we realized that there were many kids that just couldn’t afford to come to California and hang out with us. So, we decided it was time to put our curriculum onto a DVD so anybody, anywhere could have the opportunity to learn from Team Dynasty. It’s Volume 1, so we covered the skills we considered to be fundamentally necessary at the competitive level. These are the skills and techniques that every Pro play must have and understand.
Pbstar: How long were you working on Dysected Vol I?
Brad: It was only a three-day shoot at Hollywood Sports Park here in California for the instructional segments, but I followed the team all over the world to get the action footage. There is footage from the Millennium Series events in Germany and France as well as PSP footage from the LA Open. And in between these events I edited the show. So, I put at least four months into this project.
Pbstar: Some guy in camo with neat coil remote asked me the other day if non-tournament paintball players would be interested in Dysected. I told him to buy the DVD or else I’d strangle him with his remote hose. I’m not sure I said the right thing. How would you have responded?
Brad: Team Dynasty is a competition paintball team and Dynasty Dysected was developed with up and coming tournament players in mind. However, anybody who watches this DVD is going to learn. Especially the Rec ball players! These skills are simply going to keep you in the game longer and you’re going to shoot more people because of it.
Pbstar: I just finished watching Dysected, and this DVD has a ton of great information. What is your favorite chapter and why?
Brad: That’s a hard question for me. I put my heart and soul into this project, so every chapter means something to me. However, the chapter that teaches you proper form, like how to hold your marker and position yourself has gotten a lot of feedback! People are amazed that such a small piece of advice could so drastically improved there over all game.
Pbstar: Did it ever cross your minds that you’re giving away too many of the team’s secrets to success?
Brad: We joked about it a little bit during production. But, here’s where Team Dynasty is coming from… There are a lot of kids out there that really want to elevate their game to the next level. These kids are in a transitional period between rec-ball and competition-ball. However, to get better they have to cut their teeth in the local street-ball scene. Which is generally made up of very egotistical and equally talented players. This is very intimidating for new players and causes many of them to go back to rec ball or quit playing paintball all together! So, Team Dynasty decided not to hold back on any of our secrets or theories. We wanted these kids to be able to have the skills and techniques that would help them during this period, not to mention the rest of their playing careers. It would literally take years of playing on your own to learn what’s covered in Dynasty Dysected. And after all, the kids are the future of paintball and this was a way for us to help strengthen our future at a grass roots level.
Pbstar: Imagine that I’m not the paintballstar that I am. Hard to imagine I know, but bear with me. If I sucked miserably and watched Dynasty Dysected, can you guarantee me I’ll become a better player?
Brad: Yes! I have had Pro players come up and tell me that they even learned a thing or two!
Pbstar: Since it is Volume 1, I’m assuming there are plans for more Dynasty DVDs in the future. What’s next and when will we see it?
Brad: Yes, we have been pooling our ideas and theories for a second DVD. It will cover more advanced techniques and theories. However, I’m currently editing our 2004 World Tour DVD. I followed the Team all over the World and I’m going to show everybody what it’s like to be a member of Team Dynasty. It’s full of interviews, meetings, birthday parties, the up’s, and down’s. We are tentatively looking at a late February release, just in time for the season openers.
Pbstar: Have you given any thought to a Dynasty Gone Wild DVD? I hear BC likes to dress up in a cowboy hat and daisy dukes.
Brad: Well, the 2004 World Tour DVD will have some off field antics, but BC’s cowboy character might be a little too much for our young viewers.
Pbstar: Any secret DVD easter eggs, codes, etc? I heard if you push pause-123 during the Bunkering chapter Todd Martinez appears on the screen in a diaper and does a little dance.
Brad: No, unfortunately I had very little time in post-production to build things of that nature. So, I put everything in the outtakes chapter.
Pbstar: How about some gossip. Any bizarre hazing or pre-tournament rituals?
Brad: Hmmm… I plead the 5th.
Pbstar: Who’s the biggest ladies man?
Brad: I’d have to say Ryan.
Pbstar: Who’s always late to practice?
Brad: Ryan, but somehow he always makes the first game. And that counts as on time in his book.
Pbstar: Hardest team to play against?
Brad: There are a lot of great teams out there and the competition just keeps getting better. But, when we focus we are simply unbeatable. So, the hardest team to play is ourselves metaphorically speaking. And I think we proved that at this year’s PSP World Cup.
Pbstar: Shocker or Nerve?
Brad: I personally haven’t even shot a Nerve yet, so I will have to go with the Shocker by default. However, SK has been shooting the Nerve and really likes it!
Pbstar: HALO or 10 round tube?
Brad: My motorized 10 round tube is really FAST! But, my HALO is better.
Pbstar: Legos or Lincoln Logs and why?
Brad: I actually like both, and used both while playing back to the future games.
Pbstar: With the NPPL qualifying all pro teams for 2005, will we see Dynasty’s second team, Entourage, playing in division I?
Brad: That’s a good question. I’m not sure what the organization’s final decision will be on that subject. But, I feel we still need a place for up and coming talent to play and learn the ropes before jumping up to the first squad. So, I’m gonna go out on a limb here and say we will have a second team playing in the Semi Pro Div. 1 category next year.
Pbstar: What are your thoughts about teams like Entourage, Aftershock, Russian Legion, and Strange being forced to play D1, while other “pro” teams that have never made the finals in a US event like Shockwave UK and London Tigers get to stay in the pro bracket?
Brad: Points are points and those teams qualified. The league is set up to reward commitment, and those teams made an effort to attend as many event as they could afford. And the teams mentioned above didn’t. On a side note, I have heard that the NPPL may develop a semi pro bracket that will allow the amateur teams to stay amateur. I think that is a very good idea. There are enough semi pro teams to make the category work. And it’s not fair to the amateur teams to have to compete with the likes of us! Adjusting the infrastructure for this won’t be as easy as one would think tho. So, it’s very likely it won’t happen.
Pbstar: I’ve got this pet hippopotamus that’s just sitting here staring at me. How do I get him to stop? He’s kind of getting on my nerves…
Brad: Stop collecting stuffed animals. You’re a little old for that now don’t you think?
Pbstar: Any thoughts on what the NPPL should do about the ramping gun issue? Randomly test guns on every team? Just open it up to full auto like the NXL?
Brad: For me safety is of the up most concern. Paintball technology is in such a rapid state of growth it bypasses the safety of players in its quest to producer faster and ultimately more dangerous products. And any rule created to protect the player will have my approval. If full auto is found to be safe… let me tap it, I must have it!
Pbstar: Finish the next couple sentences, Dynasty is the best team in the world because….
Brad: We love what we do.
Pbstar: Pbstar.com is the best paintball website in the world because…
Brad: You put that new P8NT Ride or Die section in, not to mention the timely manner in which you post accurate information.
Pbstar: You should run out and buy Dynasty Dysected today because…
Brad: It’s a great stocking stuffer! And $30.00 is a worthwhile investment for your game!
Pbstar: Anything else you’d like to add?
Brad: Happy Holidays! I love you Mom! And I’d like to thank each one of my brothers on Team Dynasty! And all the people who have enjoyed this DVD, you know who you are!
Pbstar: Thanks!
Brad: No, thank you!
